Digital Discoveries
The Digital Discoveries Academy is a three-year middle school program designed to introduce students to essential computer science and digital media skills. The program begins in 6th grade and continues through 8th grade, allowing students to progressively build their knowledge and apply real-world technology skills. Programs like Digital Discoveries are often aligned with broader middle school computer science pathways that emphasize creativity, problem-solving, and communication through technology.
Across all three years, the Digital Discoveries Academy aims to:
- Build strong digital literacy and computer skills
- Encourage creativity and innovation through technology
- Provide real-world, hands-on learning experiences
- Prepare students for future coursework and careers in technology fields
6th Grade: Computer Fundamentals
In 6th grade, students take a semester-long Computer Fundamentals course that builds foundational technology skills. During this course, students:
- Develop basic computer literacy
- Learn to navigate and use essential software tools
- Work within Microsoft Office applications, including spreadsheets and presentations
- Gain hands-on experience with tools used in real-world office environments
This foundation prepares students for more advanced digital applications in later grades.
7th Grade: Multimedia and Broadcasting
In 7th grade, students enroll in a semester-long Multimedia course where they expand their digital skillset. In this course, students:
- Learn to design and build websites
- Explore and work with social media and digital platforms
- Develop skills in digital communication and content creation
A key component of the 7th grade experience is student involvement in Bear TV, the school’s internal media platform. Students:
- Create and deliver video content
- Manage production and broadcasting
- Oversee messaging shared with the entire school community
This hands-on experience helps students build confidence in communication, collaboration, and media production.
8th Grade: Application and Exploration
By 8th grade, students apply the skills they have learned in earlier years to more advanced projects. Coursework typically emphasizes:
- Creative problem-solving through technology
- Real-world applications of computer science
- Collaboration, presentations, and project-based learning
These experiences encourage students to see technology as a tool for expression, innovation, and communication.
